The decision to adopt the Jim Crow Laws was one of the major differences between the northern states and the southern states. Many Southern States took advantage of these laws by segregating . Most buses in the South had different seats for colored people and whites. In addition, many Southern states would also have different water fountains for colored people and whites. Many Northern states were shocked when the Jim Crow Laws were adopted by Southern states. Many Northern states opposed the these laws, however, nothing could be done since they were laws enforced by other states. The United States was forced to accept these aggressive laws created by former slave states because the laws were only enforced within the border of the state that accepted the Jim Crow Laws. The tenth amendment assisted the southern states that accepted the Jim Crow Laws because it helped them adopt laws that most northern states opposed.
